For frontline workers
Stepping into leadership
For frontline social workers exploring a first management or lead role. This is how I think about it, not career advice.
The order I think in
- Scope. I start with what I am accountable for, before I automate anything.
- Systems. I learn the workflows, logs and handoffs the team already uses.
- People. I practise clear decisions and supervision conversations.
- AI with guardrails. I add draft-only tools only after privacy and approval rules are clear.
FAQ
How do I move from frontline social work into a management role?
I can’t tell you what is right for your career, but I can share the order I think in: get clear on scope, learn the systems the team runs on, practise people leadership, and only then add AI tools behind clear guardrails.
The four stages above walk through that order.
Should new social service leads use AI right away?
That is a call for you and your agency. In my own workflow, AI stays draft-only, inputs are scrubbed, and I approve everything before it is sent. I start with lower-risk operations tasks such as scheduling checks and research briefs.
